The capital of North Carolina has a deep and rich history. Raleigh is keeping with the times and celebrating its fascinating past at the same time. The city that was named after Sir Walter Raleigh is one of the most most, industrialized and beautiful places in the country. There are plenty of great annual events in the Raleigh area. An example of this is the NCAA Tournament otherwise known as "March Madness" regional games that take place there. The state of North Carolina has some of the best and most passionate basketball fans in the country so Raleigh is the perfect location for this event. The closest minor league baseball team would either be the Carolina Mudcats, but there is no team actually in Raleigh. There are couple of local community theater groups to participate in as well if sports truly isn't something you like to watch or participate in. Because there are so many dedicated sports fans in the Raleigh area the city also has an NHL team as another attraction. They have a number of home games where tickets are available throughout the rest of the NHL season. Other events that are also kid oriented in Raleigh include the Universoul Circus and all exhibits at the North Carolina Museum of Art and History. There will be information about pirates who lived in the Raleigh area for four months at the museum starting in March. While you are exploring all the great things to in Raleigh there are also many fine restaurants to eat at while you are there. The Second Empire is known for their outstanding wine list and wonderful setting for private dinners if requested. The Second Empire also hosts wedding receptions and business gatherings if the schedule permits. It can be a very expensive visits, but is well worth the price if you like a nice quiet evening with a good meal surrounded by family and friends. If you want something a little more affordable and unique you could eat at Kanki's which is a Japanese restaurant that offers a "recession proof sushi" role because they have a buy one, get one free promotion. In fact there are quite a few restaurants in Raleigh that have a diverse menu to serve a diverse population. Of course the University of North Carolina State is located in Raleigh. The university has launched several projects involving Eos computers within their engineering department that they hope will bring businesses and federal research dollars into the state. They also have a wonderful disability services offices at North Carolina State that fits right in with the very caring/understanding community in regards to disabilities within the city. The university staff post projects on a regular basis that inform students how they are improving the campus for people with disabilities. There are a few private universities and a tech school within the city limits as well so there are plenty of educational opportunities available in Raleigh. The city has had trouble with the sale of unregistered handguns so Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition. This is one example of a vibrant community with plenty of differing, yet civil political opinions that exist in the city.
